For both Marketing and Communications roles, the exact skills and experience we look for when recruiting will depend on the individual job.  Particularly in the mid to senior levels, we look for prior relevant work experience, in a similar specialisation, or similar organisation, i.e. our FMCG clients would prefer FMCG experience. Government agencies like to see work history that includes government.

Within Marketing, any kind of verifiable experience in automation, data analysis, data visualisation and customer segmentation is a great way to differentiate yourself from the ‘standard’ candidate. Demonstrable understanding of UX and Information Architecture, and capability looking after the front end of CMSs (all types) are hot skills in the current market.

For PR, Media and External Comms roles in the private sector, a journalism background is highly desirable. For the same roles in the public sector, previous experience in parliament is well regarded, and sought after.

For Digital Communications, experience writing and uploading content to websites is useful, and it’s helpful to be able to provide a portfolio.

Our clients have a preference for tertiary-educated candidates, and look for a Bachelor of Commerce, with Marketing or Communication majors, or equivalent.

For job seekers interested in digital communications roles, post-grad, certificates or short courses on CMS/UX/UI are very beneficial.

Many organisations will consider candidates with different educational backgrounds, as long as they have necessary skills and required years of experience; it does depend on the role.

For high level Communication and Engagement roles (mostly public sector)  International Association for Public Participation (IAPR2) and/or Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) qualifications are desirable.

Both Marketing and Communications are sectors where flexibility is deeply embedded.

In our experience, talented job seekers in this area value flexibility very highly, with candidates actively seeking employers who offer this arrangement (and little interest in those who don’t).

Fortunately, the majority of clients we work with offer some kind of flexible working structure; most request a balance of remote work with some face-to-face office time, i.e the hybrid model. Very occasionally we recruit for fully-remote positions but this model is fairly rare.
