Types of work

We help healthcare and medical professionals find roles across three different types of work: permanent, temporary, and contracting. We’re often asked what the differences are between these three categories, so here’s a short overview of all three:

Permanent employment

Typically, permanent employment means that you’re employed on a permanent basis, working a regular, guaranteed number of hours every week for a healthcare provider. Your permanent role may be full-time or part-time; this depends on the number of weekly hours of work that you agree with your employer in your employment contract. Once you’ve met certain criteria you will accrue entitlements such as annual and sick leave.

Temporary assignments

As a temporary employee working through Madison Health, your employment agreement is with us, so we’re responsible for the majority of your employment needs, such as beginning or ending an assignment, approval of leave, changes of duties, and getting paid. However, most of the time you’ll be working at our clients’ workplace, under their day-to-day direction or supervision. This is known as a triangular employment situation.
Temporary work can offer great flexibility and allows you to develop new skills, gain experience in new areas, and understand different business cultures to discover what suits you best. Sometimes a temporary assignment can even lead to a permanent role!

Contracting

Contractors are self-employed and earn their income by invoicing a company (generally a ‘daily rate’) for their services to complete a deliverable, with a clear start and end date. As a contractor, you pay your own taxes and ACC levies, and while you won’t be entitled to the same employment rights as permanent staff, you enjoy other benefits instead. For example, as you change jobs more regularly you’re able to adjust your rates to meet market rates as they increase. You also have much more freedom than typical employment roles, as you control when, where, and how you work. If you think that contracting might be a good fit for you, we can help you understand what opportunities are out there.
