For some senior sales roles, there may be a request for tertiary qualifications in some form of business-related field.

It can depend on the level of role that you are looking for, but generally, previous sales experience is the most sought after requirement. Sales experience can come in many forms, and even junior level jobs on a resume, such as door-to-door sales or fundraising, are viewed positively as the skills needed to be successful in roles like these are highly transferable.

Some sales positions do ask for specific industry experience, for example, in order to be able effectively translate product knowledge to prospective customers.  However many hiring managers are open to candidates from outside of the industry, and specific product knowledge can often be learned.

When recruiting on behalf of our clients, in addition to sales experience, our priority is looking for the demonstrable soft skills that are essential to sales success. These include:

• Confidence
• Patience
• Resilience (able to overcome rejection)
• Self-driven/motivation
• Excellent communication skills
• The ability to build rapport and positive relationships.

Successful sales people have what is sometimes called a ‘go getter’ personality—this usually means energy and persistence—there can be long sales cycles to deal with, and no guarantee of instant wins!

Ultimately, we look for candidates who are enthusiastic, proactive, and who love sales.

Due to the nature of the work, sales positions typically do not offer working from home (WFH) flexibility—but, they do offer a lot of autonomy, and flexibility in the work itself.

Many sales positions require travel, i.e. Sales Reps, Account Managers and Business Development Managers (BDMs) are often ‘on the road’, meeting with clients. Flexibility in sales roles like these usually comes in the form of building your own call and visit cycle. As long as clients are being seen regularly, then you organise your day, how you like.

Some organisations like employees to be in the office for admin and team connection, whilst others are happy with employees working from home; it depends on the business. Please ask your Madison consultant about specific roles you are interested in.
