We’re often asked what the differences are between these three categories, so here’s a quick run-down of all three.
Typically, permanent employment means that you are employed on a permanent basis, working a regular, guaranteed number of hours every week for an employer. Your permanent role may be full-time or part-time – this depends on the number of weekly hours of work that you have agreed with your employer, in your employment contract. Once you have met certain criteria you will accrue entitlements such as annual and sick leave. Madison works with employers across New Zealand to help them to find permanent employees for their business.
As a temporary employee working through Madison, you have an employment agreement with us and we are your employer. We are responsible for the majority of your employment needs, such as beginning or ending an assignment, approval of leave, changes of duties and getting paid. Most of the time you will be working at our clients’ workplace. Madison will agree a set list of duties with you and we will be your go-to for any employment-related questions, however you will be under the day-to-day direction or supervision of our client. This is known as a triangular employment situation. Temporary work can offer you a high degree of flexibility, and you may be placed on an assignment for a day, a week, a month or longer. Temporary assignments allow you to gain experience in new industries and business cultures, as well as develop new skills
Contractors are self-employed and earn their income by invoicing a company (generally a ‘daily rate’) for their services to complete a deliverable. As a contractor, you pay your own taxes and ACC levies, and you will not receive employment benefits such as sick or annual leave. If you think that contracting might be a great fit for you, Madison can help you understand what opportunities may be out there. Many employers across New Zealand rely on contract staff to support them through peak periods or to deliver specific projects. Learn more about working with our Contractor Resourcing team.
