Assistant Accountant

We’re seeking an Assistant Accountant to join a high-performing finance team, supporting the delivery of accurate financial reporting, compliance, and operational finance activities across the business.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong accounting foundation who enjoys working across and supporting with month-end reporting, reconciliations, tax compliance, budgeting, and process improvement. This is a temporary role for around 2-3 months, based in Grafton, with parking onsite.
About the role:
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the integrity of financial information and supporting the smooth operation of the finance function. This position offers broad exposure across financial accounting, month-end and year-end processes, taxation support, audit support, and business reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with month-end close activities, including journals, accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations.
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and investigate any discrepancies.
- Support the preparation of monthly management reports, including variance analysis and financial insights.
- Maintain the fixed asset register.
- Perform bank reconciliations and ensure transactions are accurately recorded.
- Assist with cash flow reporting and forecasting activities.
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes, including analysis of actual versus budget performance.
- Manage supplier invoice processing, coding, approvals, and payment preparation.
- Process employee expenses and company card transactions, ensuring compliance with company policies.
- Maintain supplier records and respond to internal and external finance queries.
- Ensure sundry invoices are processed accurately and within required timeframes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of finance processes, systems, and controls.
- Assisting with the preperation of GST and FBT returns and supporting documentation.
- Support responses to Inland Revenue and other compliance-related enquiries.
- Ensure all financial activities comply with relevant legislation and internal policies.
- Assist with year-end financial statement preparation and audit schedules.
- Work closely with external auditors and provide required information in a timely manner.
- Support the completion of statutory reporting and year-end adjustments.
- Assist with finance projects, system enhancements, and testing activities.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the business to improve finance processes and documentation.
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting support as required.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
- 3+ years’ experience in an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Officer, or similar accounting role.
- Experience supporting month-end processes, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Working knowledge of GST and FBT requirements.
- Strong Excel skills and confidence working with accounting systems.
- Experience with Dynamics 365 Business Central or similar ERP systems would be advantageous.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organisational and time management abilities.
- The ability to build effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- A proactive approach and willingness to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
