Junior to Intermediate Lawyer
$55 - $60 per hour - Remote work

An opportunity has arisen for a junior to intermediate lawyer to step into a fast-paced, delivery-focused assignment providing immediate support within a local government legal team. This is a role where your ability to work independently, apply sound judgement, and manage high-volume statutory workflows will be critical.
This engagement offers the chance to contribute meaningfully in a public sector environment managing time-sensitive LGOIMA and Privacy Act matters. With a primarily remote setup and clear scope, it’s well suited to a capable contractor who thrives on ownership, pace, and delivering robust, defensible outcomes.

The Team:

The in-house Legal Services team provides critical support across the organisation, navigating regulatory, statutory, and governance matters. The team is collaborative, pragmatic, and focused on enabling the organisation to operate effectively while managing legal risk in a transparent and accountable way.

The Role:

This contract role will see you providing hands-on legal support with a strong focus on managing statutory information requests and associated processes. You will take ownership of LGOIMA requests end-to-end, while also supporting Privacy Act matters and Ombudsman-related work.
Working closely with senior solicitors, you will play a key role in maintaining the flow and quality of legal outputs, ensuring requests are handled efficiently, accurately, and in line with legislative obligations. This is a practical role requiring confidence, initiative, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision in a high-volume environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage LGOIMA requests end-to-end
  • Assess incoming requests and determine appropriate responses
  • Engage effectively with internal stakeholders to gather information
  • Draft clear, accurate, and defensible responses
  • Respond to and support Ombudsman inquiries and investigations
  • Manage Privacy Act requests, including access and correction requests
  • Undertake legal research to support decision-making
  • Draft legal correspondence, advice, and documentation

About You:

  • Qualified lawyer (NZ admitted or eligible), ideally with 1–4+ years’ PQE
  • Proven experience managing LGOIMA/OIA requests (essential)
  • Experience with Privacy Act matters (essential)
  • Exposure to Ombudsman processes or investigations is highly desirable
  • Background in local government or broader public sector preferred
  • Able to work independently and deliver at pace in a high-volume environment
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Sound judgement, particularly in politically sensitive or high-profile matters
  • Excellent written communication skills – clear, concise, and defensible

Why This Role?

  • Immediate start with a clearly defined and impactful scope
  • Remote working arrangement
  • Opportunity to contribute to meaningful public sector work
  • High level of autonomy and ownership in day-to-day delivery
  • Work alongside an experienced in-house legal team
  • Initial 2-month contract with potential to extend
