We’re seeking a Student Engagement Advisor to become a key part of a well-established tertiary education provider. This is a unique opportunity to make a genuine impact on students’ educational journeys by identifying barriers to success, coordinating support, and ensuring learners remain engaged throughout their studies.

This is not a counselling position. Instead, you’ll act as a trusted advisor, connector and advocate, helping students access the right support at the right time while working closely with trainers, student services and pastoral care teams.

About the Role
Working alongside the Student Employment Advisor, you’ll support students and partner closely with trainers and leadership to identify learners who may require additional support.

You’ll act as a key point of contact for students, helping them navigate challenges that may impact their attendance, participation or achievement. Working collaboratively across the organisation, you’ll coordinate and facilitate support plans and connect students with appropriate internal and external services where required.

You will also facilitate student feedback initiatives, support student representative forums and play an important role in ensuring student voice is heard across the organisation.

A significant aspect of the role involves supporting the organisation’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, strengthening engagement with Māori learners and helping create an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.

Hours:
Option of 30 or 40 hours depending on your preference, with some flexibility around hours 

Key Responsibilities

• Build strong, trusted relationships with students
• Monitor student engagement, wellbeing and participation
• Identify barriers affecting student success and coordinate appropriate support
• Facilitate weekly student risk and intervention meetings
• Develop and monitor action plans for students requiring additional support
• Connect students with internal and external services where appropriate
• Coordinate student representative groups, forums and feedback processes
• Partner with trainers and support teams to improve student outcomes
• Support student engagement activities, events and initiatives
• Work alongside the Māori Advisor to strengthen culturally responsive support
• Promote and embed Te Tiriti principles throughout the student experience
• Maintain accurate records, reporting and student documentation

About You
You’ll bring a genuine commitment to helping learners succeed, along with the confidence to build trust, have courageous conversations and maintain strong personal and professional boundaries.

To be successful, you’ll likely have:

• Experience within the tertiary education sector
• A background in student support, learner engagement, pastoral care, education or community services
• Strong relationship-building and communication skills
• Experience supporting students facing barriers to participation or achievement
• Excellent organisational and administrative abilities
• Confidence working across multiple stakeholders and support networks
• Strong judgement, resilience and professional boundaries
• The ability to identify needs and facilitate appropriate referrals and interventions

Ideally, you’ll also have:

• Experience working in tertiary education or training environments
• Experience supporting Māori and Pasifika learners and communities
• Facilitation, workshop or event coordination experience
• Knowledge of learner wellbeing, retention or student success initiatives
